Guatemala and Nicaragua triumph at Central American Zone tournaments of the Men’s IHF Trophy South and Central America

The Central American Zone men's youth and junior tournaments of the Men’s IHF Trophy South and Central America finished on Saturday 20 April in Managua, Nicaragua. The competition winners - Guatemala at the youth and Nicaragua at the junior age category - also qualified for the Continental Phase of the IHF Trophy Central and South America.

In the semi-finals of the youth (U18) competition on Friday, Guatemala comfortably defeated El Salvador 33:14, and home side Nicaragua won by even a bigger margin against Costa Rica, 45:23. 

On the following day, Guatemala proved too strong for Nicaragua in the final match, taking a 26:24 win, while Honduras took bronze after defeating El Salvador in the third-place encounter, 34:32. 

In the junior (U20) event, both Nicaragua and Guatemala also progressed to the final. In the semi-final against Honduras, the home side took a 51:34 victory over Honduras, while Guatemala had the upper hand against Costa Rica in a low-scoring game, 19:16. 

But unlike the U18 tournament, the hosts managed to claim the trophy, as they beat Guatemala 34:22 in the final match on Saturday.  And Costa Rica finished third, as they had a big advantage over Honduras and cruised to a 39:20 victory.
