The team that will represent Barbados in Santo Domingo first came together last October – back then 25 athletes formed the team. After a break at the end of the year, they resumed their preparation in January 2019 with five training sessions a week.

“Our biggest strength is the ability to work together and get the job done despite the challenges we face, with very limited resources,” says coach Samuel Payne. For him, the two opponents they will meet in the preliminary round – USA and CUBA – are “very strong” and “will be a challenge for us, but the team has lots of courage and will be one to watch in this upcoming tournament.

“Although Barbados is still in its development stage in sport we have hopes of placing within the top eight teams in the tournament. Also, we want to use this competition as a launch pad to stir interest in handball in the island,” he concluded.
