Mexico made history when they ranked fifth at the Santiago de Chile 2017 Youth Pan American Championship to qualify for their first ever IHF Men’s World Championship in any age category – later that year, they played at Georgia 2017.
The basis of 2017 team has now been promoted to the senior squad. Therefore, their average age is only 23. “The young athletes come to renew the team with the experience of that World Championship,” explains coach Angel Rojas.
They have been preparing for almost one month including technical, tactical and physical workouts. During that period, they played several matches against club teams from Mexico City.
“Our aim is to test the young players, who are almost half of the squad [precisely seven, led by left back Andres Martinez] with views to the Pan American Games,” says Rojas. Mexico qualified to Lima 2019 after coming in third at the Central American and Caribbean Games last year in Barranquilla, Colombia.
